New Year Resolution – Looking Ahead In the New Year

Here we are again, welcoming a new year, and not yet finished with all the goals and resolutions of the year prior! This seems to happen every year, yet we find a way to bemoan the movement into a new year with unfinished business. I think of this as a gift in an odd way. Not a neat package that you can open and go forward and enjoy, but one that says to me, “Take a look at what you tried to do, and almost got there, then maybe you gave up on it….what can you do differently to achieve this desire?” This is the real wake-up call for me (and maybe for you, too!). It’s not that I don’t want to achieve the desired outcome; it is simply that I get distracted, redirected, and ultimately, sometimes lose motivation. So, the real question is, “How can I charge up the motivation and keep it going for me?”

My answer sounds simple, but this is the year that I am committed to doing it, albeit 8 days into the new year! The answer comes from being honest with myself, committed to being compassionate, kind, and gentle, and giving myself daily time to meditate and provide positive affirmations when something goes astray. All of this requires mindfulness that says, “I am important,” you can do this too because you are important too.

Someone said to me the other day, “You don’t have to deal with… so you don’t understand the struggle…” The comment took me aback, but I quickly corrected my misperception. I, too, am as human as the next person, and we all deal with life, presenting challenges that we don’t have on our agenda on any given day. Yes, we are all human. And, as humans, we all deal with the same emotions, feelings, hurts, and challenges as our neighbors. The difference is that we all cope in our own manner, and some people don’t try to make a change, so they feel sad and frustrated.

I have a few decades under my belt, and want to enjoy the few ahead of me with joy and lightness in my heart. I heard a rap star say the other day when being interviewed, “The rearview mirror is small because that is behind us, and the front window is big so that we can see what is in front of us and where we have to get to…” It was a great analogy!

Consider your relationships, weight issues, or negativity towards yourself, your job, and your home. The window is big, and you can see potential! Dream it, do it! This is your time and my time to take action to support the compassionate being that we are. Let’s head forward , day by day, and make our vision come to life, that we can wear, promote, and be proud of within ourselves at all times.

Happy New Year, 2024

May your desires for your self-development be alive every day in your mind and heart.
