The recent concern for the coronavirus cannot be overlooked. It is broadcasted on all forms of media, with all different levels of government officials coming forward to guide their pubic to not panic. The simple fact that everywhere you look, you see something about this virus is enough to make people become unnerved. So what should someone do to protect their state of wellness from this virus? Here are some simple tips:
- If you are not feeling well, rest. Resting permits the body to recuperate and decreases stress on the immune system.
- If you are sick, get checked by your health care provider, and follow the recommendations provided.
- Wash your hands with soap and water. Use warm water, take twenty seconds to wash and use a bit more friction during the action of handwashing.
- Avoid touching doorknobs and handles as they harbor germs from those who used them before you. Instead, use gloves, your sleeve, or a tissue to protect your hands, and wash your hands as soon as you can.
- Practice good personal hygiene, this includes good dental/oral care, bathing, skincare, and changing clothing on a regular basis.
- If you cough or sneeze, use a tissue to cover your mouth or nose. After use, discard it properly. If you don’t have a tissue, cough into your arm to avoid the spray of your germs.
- Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is essential for our body’s defenses to work properly.
- Eat healthy—clean your vegetables and fruit, and maintain a balanced diet. Avoid sugars and excess starches as they cause inflammation in the body, and if you have any respiratory condition, avoid milk products, as they can produce excess mucous.
- Take your vitamins and supplements to support your body’s strength and immune support.
- Avoid crowds and keep your distance from others–an arm’s length at least is safe.
- Stay calm and live your life as you normally do—stress causes inflammation and taxes our immune system unnecessarily.
- Get rest. Try to sleep at least 6-8 hours per night.
Some things to keep on hand when you are out and about living your life:
- Tissues
- Keep a plastic bag with wipes or paper towels moistened with soap for use as needed.
- Carry your water in a glass container and refill it frequently throughout the day to maintain hydration.
- Think positive and be aware of your body, spirit, and energy.
Things to keep in mind:
- When you are stressed you are taxing your immune system.
- When you are happy, you produce endorphins and generally feel better. When you feel better, your energy is positive. When your energy is positive, your immune system responds in a positive manner to support you.
- Be mindful of your energy and your thoughts. Your thoughts carry through to your actions and can have a positive or negative impact on your immunity.
- Treat yourself and others with care.
